Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin possibly facing jail time for college admissions cheating scandal

Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were indicted by federal authorities on Tuesday for allegedly participating in a nationwide bribery scam to get their kids into elite universes.

Huffman was arrested in her home and later appeared in a Los Angeles federal court where she posted $250,000 bail and had to surrender her passport. However, her husband, actor William H. Macy, has not yet been charged in the alleged bribery scam but did show up at the courthouse to support his wife.

Loughlin’s fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, was arrested as well and posted $1 million bail on Tuesday. The “Fuller House” star didn’t show up in court until Thursday and her bail was also set at $1 million. She’ll have to surrender her passport in December.

The three celebrity parties involved have yet to enter a plea but are scheduled to appear in court in Boston on March 29.

The scandal, at least for Loughlin, has already made an impact on her career. On Thursday, a rep for Crown Media — the umbrella group that includes the Hallmark Channel — confirmed to Fox News that the company has cut ties with the 54-year-old star.

Reputations and careers aside, are the Hollywood stars facing possible jail time?

Fox News spoke with California-based criminal defense attorney, Lara Yeretsian, who has represented celebrity defendants including Michael Jackson and Scott Peterson but is not working Loughlin or Huffman, about what possible jail time the two actresses may be looking at.

Yeretsian predicted that “if  [Loughlin is] convicted at trial could serve 37-46 months. But, if she enters into a plea agreement, could have 27-33 month custody time or possible probation with no jail or go under house arrest.”

For Huffman, Yeretstein thinks that “if she’s convicted at trial, she could serve 12-18 months in jail” or “if she enters into a plea agreement, 8-14 months but probation is likely for her.”

Yeretsian points out that “there are a number of factors that can have an impact on the sentencing guideline range, including the amount of loss of money involved, the level of sophistication of the alleged conspiracy, the role the defendant has played in the conspiracy, acceptance of responsibility and criminal history or lack thereof.”

“In fact, if the court agrees that Loughlin and Huffman were minor participants in the conspiracy, their sentencing guideline ranges will be 21-27 [months] for Loughlin and 4-10 [months] for Huffman if they plead guilty as a result of plea negotiations,” she added.

“The focus, in this case, should be on the masterminds and architects of the conspiracy rather than the parents and students. The masterminds enriched themselves off overzealous parents,” Yeretsian stated.

“Prosecutors have mentioned that they are still deciding whether to file charges against some of the students. I would not be surprised if many of the charged parents cooperate with the prosecutors to prevent charges being filed against their children, the students.”

San Diego criminal defense attorney David P. Shapiro told Fox News that the fact Loughlin and Huffman are celebrities will play a large part as well in their sentencing — “It cannot be overlooked that people are outraged over the privilege in Hollywood. That the elite are essentially buying their kids’ way into a successful life.”

“I would recommend going above and beyond and really use this as an opportunity to make some positives changes for those kids who may have been deprived a spot at a reputable school purely because their parents didn’t have $15,000 – $500,000 to essentially bribe someone to get them in,” he added.

“She was visiting me in D.C., and then she left to the airport, and she got ambushed at the airport,” he said of Dawson who confirmed their relationship status to TMZ when cameras caught up to her.

“She was wonderful and she’s just an incredible human being,” he added of the actress.

Booker is also aware that balancing in a relationship while campaigning will be a challenging task. “As our relationship grows it’s difficult, but she is such a deeply soulful person,” he revealed. “[She] has taught me a lot of lessons about love already. That sometimes, you show the greatest strength when you make yourself vulnerable.”

“She really has this nurturing spirit that’s made me more courageous, not just in the love that I project and want to see in our country, but I think even in our own personal relationships to love more fearlessly,” he continued. “So, I’m very, very blessed to be with somebody that makes me a better person.”

DeGeneres even joked about officiating their potential White House wedding and said it would be like America’s version of a royal wedding.

Dawson said of Booker last week, “I am just grateful to be with someone that I respect and love and admire so much” and she’s really enjoying the time they get to spend with each other.

The couple first made headlines in January when they were reportedly spotted seeing a Broadway show together.

Jim Carrey slams Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman in college admission scandal-inspired painting

Jim Carrey just “flunked” actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman in his recent painting inspired by the college admission scandal.

The 57-year-old actor took to Twitter Monday to share his recent creation.

JULIA ROBERTS CALLS COLLEGE ADMISSION SCANDAL ‘SO SAD’

“It’s not only Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman and their kids, but ALL cheaters who will eventually receive a failing grade,” he wrote alongside the artwork, which included a red “F” grade.

The scandal involved wealthy families allegedly paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to secure a place for their children at some of the nation’s most prestigious universities such as Yale, the University of Southern California and Georgetown, among others.

In some cases, according to court records released last week, parents would pay the scheme’s alleged “ringleader” — William Rick Singer of California — to bribe the coaches to fill slots the universities allocated for new players with his clients’ children. To evade suspicion, the coaches and Singer would purportedly tell the prospective students to pose for pictures or would alter stock images and Photoshop their faces onto athletes’ bodies to support athletics-based admissions.

LORI LOUGHLIN’S DAUGHTER OLIVIA JADE’S HIGH SCHOOL DENIES CLASSMATE’S BULLYING CLAIM

In total, 50 people, including “Desperate Housewives” star Huffman and “Full House” alum Loughlin, were charged in the scheme.

As for Loughlin, specifically, she and fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli allegedly paid $500,000 in bribes to have their two daughters — YouTube star Olivia Jade Giannulli and her older sister Isabella — designated as recruits for the USC crew team despite the fact that neither participated in the sport.

A video Olivia posted to her YouTube channel in August of 2018 resurfaced as a result of the scandal, causing the teen to face backlash as well. At the time, she said she didn’t “really care about school.”

Carrey isn’t the only celebrity who has responded to the scandal. Model Chrissy Teigen, “Grace and Frankie” actor Ethan Embry and “Mindy Project” star Ike Barinholtz, among others, took to social media last week to mock Huffman and Loughlin and others for their alleged involvement in the scheme.

Fox News’ Jennifer Earl contributed to this report.
